AutoCAD Mechanical: what the toolset adds to AutoCAD

The AutoCAD Mechanical toolset is AutoCAD for 2D mechanical engineering. It carries libraries of standard nuts, bolts, bearings and structural sections to BS, ISO, DIN and ANSI standards, intelligent hidden-line updates when parts overlap, and calculation tools for shafts, springs and belts. For UK machine builders and fabricators who document in 2D DWG, it removes hours of manual drafting per drawing.

AutoSoftKey supplies the toolset as a 3-year licence for Windows.

How Autodesk supplies the toolsets. Autodesk includes its seven specialised toolsets with an eligible AutoCAD entitlement on Windows; each toolset is installed separately from the core application. This page is a dedicated workflow page so you can buy the entitlement that matches the work you do; it is not an additional seat on top of AutoCAD. Read our AutoCAD toolsets explained guide before choosing if you are unsure.

What AutoCAD Mechanical is used for

  • Standard parts: insert bolts, washers, bearings, steel sections and fasteners from standards libraries that update as one object.
  • Drafting standards: BS, ISO, DIN, ANSI and JIS layer, dimension and annotation standards applied automatically.
  • Associative hidden lines: overlapping parts update hidden and visible lines when the design moves.
  • Calculations: shaft, spring, belt, chain and cam generators with FEA-style stress checks.
  • BOM and balloons: automatic parts lists and balloon numbering for assembly drawings.

Who buys AutoCAD Mechanical

Mechanical engineers and draughtspeople producing 2D machinery, jig and fixture or fabrication drawings, and maintenance departments updating legacy drawing sets. Teams moving into 3D usually add Autodesk Inventor, which shares standards and exchanges DWG with the toolset.

Choosing your release year

AutoCAD Mechanical is Windows-only. Select a release year from 2024 to 2027; the toolset must match the release of the core AutoCAD it runs with, so keep the two in step if you already have AutoCAD installed. Every option carries the 3-year licence term.

Compatibility and system requirements

AutoCAD Mechanical 2026/2027 installs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 alongside AutoCAD of the same release. Autodesk recommends a multi-core processor, 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 12-capable graphics card with 4 GB or more and additional disk space for the toolset content libraries.

An Autodesk account and internet connection are required for download, installation and licence validation.

Always check the current release against Autodesk’s published system requirements before you order, because minimum specifications move with each release.
