Mac users need an Apple silicon or Intel Mac on a macOS release Autodesk still supports. Note that the specialised toolsets are Windows-only, so a Mac buyer receives AutoCAD for Mac without them.
Step 1: Set up or sign in to your Autodesk account
AutoCAD is tied to an Autodesk account (an “Autodesk ID”). If you already have one from a trial or a previous subscription, use it. If not, create one at accounts.autodesk.com with the email address you intend to use for the licence. Step 2: Download the installer from Autodesk
- Sign in at manage.autodesk.com (Autodesk Account).
- Open All products and services and find AutoCAD.
- Choose the release year you were licensed for (2024, 2025, 2026 or 2027), your platform and language, then choose a download method.
- Install (streaming installer) is the simplest option on a single machine. Download saves a full installer for offline use or several machines. Custom install lets you pick components before downloading.
Download sizes are large — several gigabytes for the core application and more for each toolset — so a wired or strong Wi-Fi connection saves frustration.
Step 3: Run the installer
On Windows, run the downloaded .exe as an administrator, accept the licence agreement, keep the default installation path unless you have a reason to change it and let the installer complete; it will download additional components if you chose the streaming option. On Mac, open the .dmg and drag AutoCAD to Applications, then open it from Launchpad. Restart if prompted.
Toolset users on Windows install each toolset (Architecture, Electrical, MEP and so on) from its own installer in the same Autodesk Account screen; they share the AutoCAD licence and appear as separate applications.
Step 4: Activate by signing in
Launch AutoCAD and choose Sign in with your Autodesk ID. There is no serial number or product key to type for current releases — activation is entirely account-based. If the account you signed in with holds the entitlement, AutoCAD opens; if it does not, you will see a message that no licence was found for that user. Check that you are signed in with the email address referenced in your delivery email.
Common installation problems and the fixes that work
“No licence found” or “licence checkout timed out”
Almost always an account mismatch or an internet problem. Sign out of AutoCAD, sign in with the correct email, and make sure a VPN, firewall or proxy is not blocking Autodesk’s licensing service. If the entitlement was only just assigned, wait a few minutes and try again.
Installer freezes or fails
Run it as an administrator, temporarily pause antivirus, install pending Windows updates and clear at least 10 GB of disk space. If the streaming installer keeps failing, use the full download option instead.
Graphics glitches after installation
Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel rather than relying on Windows Update, then switch hardware acceleration on or off in AutoCAD’s Graphics Performance settings to see which works better with your card.
Wrong release year installed
Autodesk lets you install the release you are licensed for and, on an active entitlement, earlier releases. If you installed 2025 but were licensed for 2026, uninstall and download the correct one from Autodesk Account.
